Switching cloud providers: how a facilities company moved to Virtual Computing
Switching from one cloud provider to another sounds like a big step. Yet sometimes it is exactly what is needed. Rob Huijnen, owner of a facilities company, made that switch to Virtual Computing. Not because he was new to the cloud, but because he was looking for a partner that is truly involved.
The client
Rob Huijnen runs a facilities company that provides services to various clients. The organisation was already active in the cloud, but with a different provider. The collaboration was not going well: communication was poor, the service level was insufficient and there was little attention to the specific needs of the business.
The challenge
A cloud migration from one provider to another brings unique challenges. It is not the same as a first migration from on-premise. The data is already in the cloud, applications are already configured and users are accustomed to a certain way of working. The switch must go smoothly, without employees being inconvenienced.
Additionally, trust was an important theme. After a disappointing experience with the previous provider, Rob Huijnen wanted to be sure that the new partner would be reliable, involved and knowledgeable.
The solution
Virtual Computing migrated the entire cloud environment of the facilities company to its own infrastructure. The process was carried out in close consultation with Rob Huijnen and his team:
- Inventory and planning — First, the existing environment was thoroughly mapped. What applications are running? How many users? What data needs to be transferred? Based on this, a detailed migration plan was created.
- Phased migration — The migration was carried out in phases to minimise the impact on daily operations. Workstations, email, files and applications were migrated and tested one by one.
- Personal guidance — Throughout the entire process, there was direct contact with the Virtual Computing team. No ticket numbers and queues, but personal communication with people who know the project.
- Aftercare and optimisation — After the migration, the environment was optimised and lines of communication remained short for any questions or adjustments.
The result
The switch went smoothly without significant disruptions for employees. The new environment at Virtual Computing offers better performance, higher availability and above all: a partner that thinks along and is genuinely involved.
Rob Huijnen now experiences the difference between a provider and a partner. Virtual Computing thinks proactively, identifies potential improvements and is always reachable for questions. The service level is of a completely different calibre than what he was used to.
What the client says
"During the migration of cloud services, we experienced that Virtual Computing is an involved party with a focus on the process and the wishes of the client. Expertise and service are of a high level. We are very satisfied with their services." > -- Rob Huijnen
