The concept

What Microsoft means by the modern workplace

The modern workplace is not a product you buy in a box. It is the way Microsoft builds a workplace. Anyone searching for modern workplace or digital workplace means exactly the same thing. There are five building blocks, and we set them up for you.

One identity

Every employee has one account in Microsoft Entra. It opens your workspace, your email and your applications. MFA through Microsoft Entra is part of it.

Microsoft 365

Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint and OneDrive. Your files sit in one central place and colleagues work in them at the same time.

A managed device or a managed workspace

We manage your own laptop with Microsoft Intune, or you work on the Online Workspace in our data centre. Both are a modern workplace.

Security that runs along

Microsoft Defender, disk encryption, access rules and automatic updates. That sits inside the workplace itself, not in a separate product next to it.

Working together

Teams for meetings, SharePoint for documents, shared calendars. Everyone works in the same version of a file.

The heart

Identity is the heart of the modern workplace

The server used to be the centre of an office. Today that is the employee account. Your identity in Microsoft Entra decides which applications you see, which files you open and from which device that is allowed. That is why a modern workplace starts with identity and not with hardware.

In practice that means: you sign in once and you are in your workspace, your email and your applications. No more password pop-ups. When someone leaves, we disable one account and access is gone everywhere. When someone joins, the workplace is ready the same day. Keeping that environment in shape is what we call Microsoft 365 management.

Two versions

Two versions of the same modern workplace

In the first version your whole desktop runs with us. In the second you work on your own laptop and we manage it remotely. The identity, the security and the support are the same either way. Many companies combine them: field staff on their own laptop, the office on the Online Workspace.

From the Netherlands

The Dutch version of the modern workplace

Most providers put the modern workplace entirely with Microsoft. We do it slightly differently. Your identity and your licences run through Microsoft 365 inside the EU data boundary, but your desktop, your files and your applications run on our own servers in Eindhoven and Den Bosch. That gives you modern Microsoft technology with your data in the Netherlands.

Technically we build the Online Workspace on AVD. AVD stands for Azure Virtual Desktop, the workplace technology from Microsoft. We run that technology on our own hardware in two data centres, with a backup in the other data centre. Virtual Computing is ISO 27001 certified. This applies to every Online Workspace we deliver from 1 September 2026. You can read more on sovereign cloud workspace and Azure Virtual Desktop.

The managed laptop

Version 2 up close: the managed laptop

With a Modern Workplace you work on your own laptop or PC, but it’s fully managed by us via Microsoft 365 and Intune. That means: automatic Windows updates, security policies, software distribution and — depending on your package — backups and advanced protection with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. You just keep working, we ensure your device stays secure, up to date and optimally configured in the background. Without you noticing a thing. That ongoing management, on your own laptop and on the Online Workplace, is what we call workplace management. If you want all your applications in one start screen, we combine your Modern Workplace with Workspace 365. How that per-device management works, across Windows, macOS, phones and tablets, is on device management.

The difference with our Online Workplace? The Online Workplace runs your full desktop in our data centre. With Modern Workplace you use your own device — we manage it remotely. Both offer professional management and 24/7 support. The choice depends on your situation: do you use industry-specific software that needs to run on a server? Then the Online Workplace is better. Do you mainly work with Microsoft 365 apps on your own laptop? Then the Modern Workplace fits. Many clients combine both solutions: Modern Workplace for field workers, Online Workplace for office staff with specialist software.

Security and compliance

A Modern Workplace is only complete when your devices are demonstrably secure. Via Microsoft Intune and Conditional Access we manage the security policy for all your devices — centrally, automatically and verifiably. This is not optional but part of every Modern Workplace. Below are the six pillars of our security policy:

Conditional Access

Access to company data only from managed, compliant devices. Login from an unknown device? Automatically blocked or additional verification required.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Mandatory two-step verification for all users. Combined with Conditional Access, this prevents 99.9% of all account attacks.

Device Compliance Policies

We set requirements for every device: minimum OS version, disk encryption (BitLocker), active antivirus and a lock screen. Not compliant? No access to company data.

BitLocker encryption

All hard drives are automatically encrypted. In case of loss or theft, your data is unreadable. We store recovery keys centrally in Azure AD.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint

Advanced threat protection on every device (Comprehensive plan). Detects ransomware, phishing and suspicious behaviour before it causes damage. Includes Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR).

Automatic updates

Windows updates and security patches are automatically rolled out via Update Rings. We test updates first on a ring of test devices before they go to production.

How to start with a modern workplace

You do not have to switch everything at once. We start with identity and work outwards from there.

1. We look at your Microsoft 365

Which licences you hold, how security is configured and who has access to what. That is the base the rest rests on.

2. We pick the version per group

Office staff with industry software on the Online Workspace, people who mainly work in Microsoft 365 on a managed laptop.

3. We set it up and move you over

We handle the migration and plan it outside working hours. Your employees sign in afterwards and their workplace is ready.

4. We keep it in shape

Updates, Defender, access rules and the service desk. That ongoing part is called workplace management.

The Modern Workplace starts from €10 per device per month for the Basic plan. The Medium plan with backups and software distribution costs €19.95 per device per month. The Comprehensive plan with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint costs €29.95 per device per month. All plans cancel monthly. You also need a Microsoft 365 Business Premium licence (€19.56/user/mo), which we provide as part of the package. For a company with 20 employees, this amounts to €2,400 to €7,188 per year for management — a fraction of what an internal IT employee costs.

The Online Workplace runs your complete Windows desktop in our data centre in Eindhoven or Den Bosch. You connect via a secured connection. With the Modern Workplace, you use your own laptop or PC — we manage it remotely via Microsoft Intune. The Online Workplace is ideal for industry-specific software that needs to run centrally (such as Exact, AFAS or dental software). The Modern Workplace suits companies that mainly work with Microsoft 365 apps on their own hardware. Many clients combine both: Modern Workplace for field workers, Online Workplace for office staff.

We support Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS devices. New Windows devices are automatically configured via Windows Autopilot: the employee opens the laptop, logs in with their company account and all software, settings and security policies are automatically applied. Yes, in fact: the Modern Workplace is built on Microsoft 365 Business Premium. This licence is required and includes Microsoft Intune (for device management), Azure AD (for identity management), Conditional Access (for access control) and the Office apps. We supply and manage this licence as part of the package.

Microsoft Intune is Microsoft’s cloud-based platform for device management (also known as MDM/MAM). We use it to remotely manage the configuration, updates, security and compliance of all your devices. Intune is part of Microsoft 365 Business Premium. In practice this means: we can roll out software, enforce security policies, wipe devices if lost and generate compliance reports — all from the cloud, without needing to be physically near the device.

Via Windows Autopilot: you order a new laptop from any supplier, we register the serial number in Intune. The employee opens the laptop, connects to the internet, logs in with their company account and everything is automatically configured — software, settings, security policies, VPN, printers. Within 30-60 minutes the laptop is fully set up. No IT department needed, no manual installation, no USB drives with installation files.

If a device is lost or stolen, we remotely wipe it via Intune. All company data is immediately removed. For a BYOD device (employee’s own device), we only wipe company data — personal photos and apps remain intact. Thanks to BitLocker encryption, the hard drive is unreadable to third parties anyway. A replacement device is fully set up via Autopilot within hours.

Yes. All Modern Workplace plans cancel monthly, without long-term contracts or cancellation fees. We rely on the quality of our service. If you want to stop, we help with a smooth handover.

Security is the core of the Modern Workplace. All devices are encrypted with BitLocker, so data is unreadable if lost or stolen. Via Conditional Access, only managed, compliant devices can access company data — an unknown device is automatically blocked. Multi-Factor Authentication is standard for all users. The Comprehensive plan adds Microsoft Defender for Endpoint: advanced threat detection that recognises ransomware, phishing and suspicious behaviour before it causes damage, including Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) and security reports.

Yes, Bring Your Own Device is fully supported. With Microsoft Intune we create a separation between company data and personal data on the device. The employee retains full privacy over personal apps, photos and files. Company data is separately encrypted and protected. When an employee leaves, we only wipe the company data — personal data remains untouched. This makes BYOD attractive for companies that don't want to purchase hardware.

On average 1-2 weeks for the entire company, regardless of size. We start with an inventory of your current devices, software and security status. Then we roll out Intune management in phases: first a test group of 2-3 devices, then the rest. Employees barely notice the transition — they get a prompt to log in and management becomes active in the background. Existing software and files stay in place.

Traditional IT management requires an internal IT employee who physically visits devices, or an on-site server as a management point. With the Modern Workplace, everything is managed from the cloud via Microsoft Intune. No server needed, no local network required, no physical presence of IT staff. Employees can work securely anywhere — at the office, at home or on the road — and management works exactly the same way. This makes the Modern Workplace particularly suitable for companies with multiple locations or remote workers.

Any software that runs on Windows 10, Windows 11 or macOS. The Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) are rolled out by default. Yes, especially so. Because management works entirely from the cloud via Microsoft Intune, it doesn't matter where a device is located. Whether your employees are at the office in Amsterdam, working from home in another city or on-site at a client — the security policy, updates and support are identical everywhere. No local server or network is needed. This makes the Modern Workplace ideal for companies with distributed teams.

There is none. They are two names for the same idea. You will also come across modern workplace, Microsoft workspace and digital working environment. They all describe a workplace where you sign in with one account, your files sit centrally and the device or the workspace is managed remotely. We call it the modern workplace and deliver it in two versions.

If you work with industry software that has to run centrally, such as Exact, AFAS or practice software, the Online Workspace fits. If your people mainly work in Microsoft 365 on their own laptop and want to keep working offline, the managed laptop fits. If you have to prove that your desktop and your files sit in the Netherlands, the Online Workspace is the logical choice. Combining is fine: many customers put field staff on their own laptop and the office on the Online Workspace.
