Medusa is the open-source headless commerce engine, built in TypeScript on a Node + Postgres + Redis stack. It's the open-source counterpart to Shopify's Plus / Commerce API — for brands that want complex checkout flows, B2B pricing, marketplaces or international tax, without being tied to Shopify's fees or limitations.
At Virtual Computing, Medusa runs in a dedicated stack with Postgres for your product/order data and Redis for session/cache. We connect Stripe, Mollie or another payment provider. The admin UI ('Medusa Admin') is a Next.js app for your content/order team; you build your storefront yourself in Next.js/Astro/Remix.
For those without headless experience: it requires a dev team (or agency). But in return you get full control over UX, performance (sub-1s pages with static generation), and all data — no lock-in like Shopify. For growing D2C brands with €1M+ revenue often the most scalable choice.
