What is Teams calling exactly?

Microsoft Teams has long been more than just video meetings and chat. With Teams Telephony, Teams becomes your full business phone system: you make and receive calls on your existing landline number through the same Teams app you use for meetings and collaboration. For SMEs that means no separate PBX in your server cabinet, no individual handsets on every desk, no duplicate maintenance of address books. One platform — Microsoft 365 — for chat, video, collaboration and telephony. Works on your laptop, mobile and optionally a physical desk phone. Want to know how Teams fits with your workspace, meeting rooms and M365 licences more broadly? Read our overview page Microsoft Teams for business. This page focuses specifically on the telephony side: pricing, number porting, migration and what you need to get started today.
What is Teams calling exactly?

Landline number in Teams

Your existing business number — 085, 088 or geographic — comes with you via porting.

One app on every device

Call on laptop, mobile app or physical Teams phone. Chat, video and voice in one.

Voicemail-to-email

Voicemail messages arrive as audio + transcript in your Outlook inbox.

Direct Routing via VC

We provide the NL trunk — no separate Microsoft Calling Plan licences needed.

Fall-back during outages

If Teams is unavailable, automatically reroute to mobile numbers or voicemail.

Dutch support

Migration, porting and ongoing support by a NL team that lives in your network.

What you get — concretely

For the SME Teams Telephony package we handle the complete picture, so you don't have to wrestle with Microsoft portals, SBCs or trunks: Direct Routing via VC — We provide the NL trunk and the SBC (Session Border Controller). No Microsoft Calling Plan needed — call rates via us are often better and stay within the Netherlands. Number porting on switchover — Your existing landline, 088 or geographic number (such as +31 40, 013, 073) comes with you. We arrange the port request with your current provider. Free choice of device — Call on your laptop, mobile app or a physical Teams phone (Yealink, Poly, AudioCodes). One number, all devices. Voicemail-to-email — Voicemails arrive automatically as audio + transcript in your Outlook inbox. No more separate voicemail dial codes. CDR reporting — Call records, statistics and per-user costs visible in Teams Admin Center. Power BI integration available for more extensive reporting. Fall-back during outages — If Microsoft Teams goes down, incoming calls can be automatically rerouted to mobile numbers or voicemail. No missed customers.

Who is this suitable for — and who not?

Good fit: SME organisations that already use Microsoft 365 (E1/E3/E5 or Business Standard/Premium), have 5–250 users, and want to replace their existing PBX or move beyond the 'loose handset' era. Especially attractive for businesses with home workers, multiple sites or many mobile staff. Less suitable: Organisations that still have a large undepreciated PBX hardware investment (wait until depreciation is smarter), or businesses with heavy call-centre requirements (skill-based routing, wallboards, complex IVR). For that latter group, our own isaBEL PBX is more powerful. Torn between Teams Telephony and isaBEL? Teams Telephony is cheaper and simpler if you already have M365 and your telephony requirements are manageable. isaBEL is stronger for customer-contact-intensive environments (customer service, helpdesk, brokers, law firms with heavy inbound traffic). We advise you free of charge which suits.

From old PBX to Teams in 3 steps

Migration to Teams Telephony is not a big bang. We do it in 3 steps, with continuous reachability: 1. Inventory (1 week) — We map your existing numbers, transfers, IVR menus and users. We close with a concrete picture: what stays, what goes, what changes per user. 2. Setup + testing (2 weeks) — We configure Direct Routing, set up users in Teams Admin Center and test with a pilot group (typically management + 2-3 power users). Existing PBX keeps running. No customer notices anything. 3. Go-live with number porting (1 night) — In one night we port numbers from the old provider to our trunk. When the office opens the next day, everyone calls via Teams. We stand by for support. Total: average 3 weeks from first call to go-live. For larger organisations (100+ users) we plan in 2 phases. Also see our hub Business telephony for the complete overview of our telephony options (Teams, isaBEL and Odido Business).

What it costs — transparent

Per user per month from €12, on top of your existing Microsoft 365 licence. That includes: • Direct Routing via VC (no Microsoft Calling Plan needed) • Business landline number in Teams • Call bundle NL landline + mobile (cap varies per package) • Voicemail-to-email + CDR reporting • Number porting at start, no one-off fees One-off: €0 for setup when switching from an existing PBX (we earn on monthly subscriptions). For new organisations without an existing PBX we charge a small implementation fee. For 25 users that means approximately €300 per month for the telephony layer, on top of your M365 licences. Compared to a traditional PBX (€500-€800/mo maintenance + lines) this is typically 30–50% cheaper, without considering the upfront hardware cost. Want a precise quote based on your situation? Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing business number?

Yes. We handle porting your landline, 085 or 088 number from your current provider to our trunk. No one-off porting fees when you subscribe to a Teams Telephony package with us.

Do I need Microsoft Calling Plan licences?

No. We use Direct Routing via our own NL trunk. That means you do not pay for Microsoft Calling Plan (often €10+ per user per month) and call rates remain favourable.

Does Teams Telephony work when I'm not at my desk?

Yes. Install the Teams mobile app and you make and receive calls on your business number wherever you are. One number, all devices — laptop, mobile and optionally a physical Teams phone.

What if Microsoft Teams goes down — are we unreachable?

Then fall-back kicks in. Incoming calls are automatically rerouted to mobile numbers, a designated backup number or voicemail. No missed customers during a Microsoft incident.

What does setup cost — one-off?

When switching from an existing PBX we charge no one-off setup fees — those are included in the monthly rate. For new organisations without an existing PBX there is a small implementation fee. Request a tailored quote for your situation.

How long does a migration take?

On average 3 weeks: 1 week inventory, 2 weeks setup and testing, then 1 night for the port action after which everyone calls via Teams. For 100+ users we plan in 2 phases to spread risk.

Is Teams Telephony suitable for customer service / call centre?

For light customer service with a few agents it works well — queues, IVR and transfers can all be done in Teams. For intensive customer-contact environments (skill-based routing, wallboards, complex call centre) our own isaBEL PBX is more powerful. We advise you free of charge which suits.

What is the difference with the broader Microsoft Teams page?

Our /microsoft-teams page explains the whole Teams platform (chat, video, collaboration and telephony). This page (/teams-telefonie) focuses specifically on the telephony feature — for SME owners considering replacing their PBX with Teams. Content overlap is intentionally limited.
